Why is the NIV the Most Popular Translation Today?

Since the 7th Century till today, there have been at least 450 different English translations of the Bible. So what makes the New International Version (NIV) any different from the remaining 449 translations which include notable ones such as the King James Version (KJV) and the New Living Translation (NLT)? Why has the NIV sold more than 215 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the most popular Bible translations today?
